What Is Sandblasting

Precision aluminum sample

Sandblasting is a widely used surface finishing process in CNC machining and metal fabrication. It removes surface contaminants such as rust, oxidation, scale, and residual coatings by propelling abrasive media, such as glass beads, aluminum oxide, or steel shot, onto the workpiece using compressed air or high-pressure fluid.

Beyond surface cleaning, sandblasting improves coating adhesion by increasing surface roughness, making it an ideal pre-treatment for painting, anodizing, and powder coating. It can also enhance surface consistency and help extend the durability and service life of the part.

Different applications require different surface conditions, and sandblasting offers a wide range of blasting media options. Each media type features different shapes, hardness levels, and grit sizes, typically ranging from #120 to #220, which directly affect surface finish quality, material removal rate, and the final performance of the component.

Types Of Blasting We Offer

We offer a range of blasting media to meet different surface finishing requirements.

Glass Bead Sandblasting

Glass beads are a moderately hard abrasive that gently clean the surface without damaging the base material, creating a smooth, uniform satin or matte finish. Best for cosmetic finishing, precision parts, and sensitive surfaces.

Aluminum Oxide Blasting

Aluminum oxide is a hard, highly durable abrasive that provides strong cutting action. It is best for surface preparation, rust removal, and coating adhesion, but is less suitable for delicate or tight-tolerance parts.

Steel Shot / Grit Blasting

Steel shot provides high-impact cleaning and shot peening, while angular steel grit delivers more aggressive cutting for removing heavy scale, rust, and tough coatings.

Quick Selection Guide — Choose glass bead for smooth cosmetic finishes, aluminum oxide for rust removal and coating preparation, and steel shot or steel grit for heavy-duty cleaning and surface strengthening. If you're unsure which option is best for your application, feel free to contact our engineers for guidance.
