Powder coating is a durable dry finishing process widely used for CNC machined parts, sheet metal components, and fabricated metal assemblies. During the process, electrostatically charged powder is sprayed onto the metal surface and then heat-cured to form a uniform protective coating.
Compared with traditional liquid paint, powder coating provides better corrosion resistance, impact durability, coating consistency, and long-term outdoor performance. It is available in gloss, matte, textured, and metallic finishes with full RAL color matching.
Powder coating is commonly used for CNC aluminum housings, brackets, panels, industrial enclosures, outdoor equipment, and other parts that require both appearance consistency and surface protection.
Design Tip: Powder coating adds 60-120 μm per coated surface. For parts with tight tolerances or mating faces, specify masking areas on your drawing. Threads, press-fit bores, and sealing surfaces should be masked before coating.
We support a wide range of colors and surface textures to meet both functional and aesthetic requirements. Custom RAL and Pantone color matching is also available. For custom color requests, please contact your sales engineer or email our team for assistance.
Each material is matched with the appropriate pretreatment and powder type for optimal coating adhesion and durability.

Aluminum
Common Finishes
Matte · Gloss · Textured · Metallic
Typical Applications
CNC housings · Electronics enclosures · Brackets · Heatsinks
Notes: Requires chemical pretreatment (chromate or chrome-free) for best adhesion. Most popular substrate for powder coating.

Both are common finishing methods for CNC and sheet metal parts. The right choice depends on your material, durability requirements, and coating thickness needs.
| Feature | Powder Coating | Spray Painting |
|---|---|---|
| Substrate | Metals only (requires oven curing) | Metals + Plastics + Composites |
| Coating Thickness | 60-120 μm (thicker) | 15-80 μm (thinner) |
| Dimensional Impact | Moderate - masking recommended | Minimal |
| Durability | Excellent impact, scratch, and chip resistance | Good (excellent with 2K PU system) |
| Corrosion Resistance | Excellent | Good to excellent (with primer system) |
| Color Flexibility | RAL standard + limited custom | Unlimited custom matching |
| Specialty Finishes | Matte / Gloss / Texture / Wrinkle | Metallic / Pearlescent / Soft-touch / Gradient |
| Best For | Metal production parts / Enclosures / Outdoor | Plastics / Prototypes / Thin coatings / Multi-color |
Powder coating is the better choice for metal parts that need maximum durability and corrosion protection. Spray painting is preferred for plastic parts, prototypes, thin-coating requirements, or mixed-material assemblies that need exact color matching. Not sure which is right? Contact usXmake integrates powder coating with CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication, and other surface finishing processes in one streamlined manufacturing workflow.
Coating thickness, surface preparation, and finish consistency are controlled throughout the entire production process. Because we handle all of this, we catch dimensional issues before coating - not after - reducing defects and rework.
No supplier handoffs, no re-inspection between facilities. Parts move directly from machining to surface preparation to coating on a coordinated production schedule, with typical turnaround as fast as 7 business days.
400+ CNC machines with integrated finishing capabilities, managed under ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 standards. From single prototypes to production runs of 10,000+ parts, we maintain consistent quality across every batch. NDA available upon request.
